Instead of building monumental art pieces, both artists would like to challenge themselves to use e-waste to create and give new life to them with simple resources. Three types of devices, namely scanners, printers and radios, were taken apart. The core mechanisms to generate light (Relight), movement (Remove) and sound (Retune) are reused. “Relight” consists of light devices that give life to a painting. The movement of the light for scanning images is used to let a flat picture glow. “Remove” which gives rotation and horizontal movement is used to create a manic behaviour, illustrating the hustle and bustle of the city. One of the pieces “Retune” created by Cheuk Wing Nam pays tribute to Jean Tinguely, a Swiss painter and sculptor. By using simple and existing electronics, Cheuk would like to control the tone and sound received from the radio.
About Cheuk Sze-Wing Chloe
Working simultaneously in installation, interactive media, photography and video, Chloe mainly focuses on the “structure of feeling” through exploring emotional connections with objects and mechanical devices. Through the realisation and imaginative extension of ordinary objects by metaphors and surrealistic approaches, she conjures dialogues and multiple inferences. Her works often relate to viewers’ daily experiences and memories, personally or collectively, establishing a dialogue intimately. Signifying different implications, the daily objects she uses are often found to echo with our contemporary globalised world, personally, socially and politically.
She is currently conducting a research regarding mechanism, objects, space and affection at Concordia University in Montreal, Canada. She received Special Mention Award at the 19th ifva Festival (Interactive Media Category) in 2014. Her individual and collaborative works with Kenny Wong have been selected to participate in Asia Pacific, South America, North America, Europe and Middle East. Recently her works have been presented at Ars Electronica Centre and Festival (Austria), WRO Biennale (Poland), Videotage (Hong Kong), LOOP Festival (Barcelona), ZHdK (Switzerland) and ISEA (Dubai), lately in MOCA (Taipei) and 404 Festival (Argentina). She was selected to participate in AiR program in Futurelab in Ars Electronica Centre (Austria) and was a supported artist of year 2014-15 by soundpocket (HK).
About Cheuk Wing-Nam
Cheuk Wing-Nam (also known as Chang May-Wing Joy) is an interdisciplinary artist who devotes to develop her artwork with new concepts of mixing sound and other media with the modern computer technology. She just graduated with a Master of Visual Arts (Studio Art and Extended Media) from the Hong Kong Baptist University, specializing in new media installation and sound sculpture. During her postgraduate training, she was under the tutelage of renowned artists such as Bryan Chung, Kingsley Ng and Steve Hui (aka Nerve). With these concepts in mind, she is interested to demonstrate the relationships between light and shadow, sound and space in her artwork. She graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration in International Business (Japan) and minor in Marketing from City University of Hong Kong. Then she went on pursuing a High Diploma in Fashion and Clothing (Fashion Design stream) at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. She was the winner of JAL scholarship programme in her undergraduate studies, which took her to Tokyo in order to experience Japanese culture extensively. Cheuk has exhibited multiple works, including interactive installations, sound sculptures and sound installations and she performed in some musical events. Cheuk has exhibited and performed in Sonic Environment 2016 (Brisbane, Australia), Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK, Switzerland), XXX Gallery, 22 Degrees North, Connecting Spaces, floating projects, and Hong Kong Baptist University. Recently, she is selected to participate in the Sonic Transmission Artist Exchange Project 2016 by Contemporary Musiking Hong Kong (CMHK).
