As mentioned in our brand introduction, a person’s social status may be reflected in one’s concern and care for the society and the environment, more so than through his / her wealth or power. We hope to spread this message to our audiences through our installation and mini interactive activity, which would in turn arouse their interest for the surroundings, and co-create a better world.

Wastage and pollution that prevail in Hong Kong is one of our major concerns. We hope to raise public awareness of this problem and of the environment through our project – SAVE THE FISH.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

After graduation from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University in industrial and product design, Ling Ching-Yin Kat had experience in design and product development in both large and small corporations.

Prior to founding her own studio, Kat was active serving as a cross-over project consultant with social mission for famous brands, such as Broadway Circuit.

Kat set up Alchemist Creations Co. Ltd. with two fellow PolyU graduates in 2012. With the motto “Turn Neglect into Shine”, their brainchild – the CAN-WATCH series was created from the bottom of an ordinary soda can and equipped with a genuine leather band made from handbag factory’s leather remnant.

Moreover, this home-grown brand has led to the setting up of a production line which creates job opportunity for workers at sheltered workshops in Hong Kong. She places importance on the design system. She designs and arranges an appropriate manufacturing process with members and tutors from workshops. Through the products, she hopes customers would appreciate members’ sophisticated workmanship.

The CAN-WATCH series combined the maxim of sustainability with a social mission, turning waste material into fashion accessories. With the elegant and fashionable CAN-WATCH series, their company has recently cut its mark in the international arena by winning “Best of the Best 2013” in the watch and jewellery category at the German “Red Dot Design Award. The jury described this winning entry as imparting “a very modern look and highly significant design”.
