THE NEW NORMAL

As the world slowly returns to normal, is the new norm the same as the one we were used to four years ago? Living in a globalised world means we are accustomed to having everything delivered to our doorstep, but this has all changed. Things we take for granted — the norm — can change any moment without warning, and because of this realisation, we now turn our eyes to localised production, which had been halted for too long.

LOCALISED PRODUCTION/SMALL SCALE

Localised production in Hong Kong is not easy with limited resources, especially raw ones, and we depend on nearby areas for raw and processed materials. Having said so, we can still recycle and focus on production. With only a few factories left, we should support workshops and microfactories that are popping up in increasing numbers. From woodwork to metalwork and digital fabrications, designers have new opportunities to create custom-made designs in small-batch production, serving our pressing needs.

RE-RE-SET

This is a workshop that produces objects with locally sourced materials. We ride on and polish developed systems to meet the needs of the users and simplify the process of combining materials and parts.

Creative Studio

Michael Leung

Currently based in Hong Kong, Michael co-founded his studio, Studio AA (previously known as MIRO), in the Netherlands after completing his MA in Contextual Design at Design Academy Eindhoven in 2010. Michael’s works explore the multifaceted nature of design ranging from crafts and industrial to design systems and sustainability. He pushes the boundaries of design in different directions, levels and disciplines — from two-dimensional to objects and spatial.

Michael’s works have been showcased at the Milan and Dutch Design Week, Vitra Design Museum, and various international design exhibitions and museums. As well as being a designer, Michael is a lecturer and leads workshops in education institutes. He is the awardee of the Hong Kong Young Design Talent Award and Perspective’s 40 under 40 Award. Michael has collaborated with Vitra Design Museum (DE) and V&A (UK) on curation and exhibition design, where his creativity is manifested in the form of exhibitions.
