Live Edges

1 / 1

In traditional wood furniture making, live edges are usually chopped off of wood logs as their density and colour vary from the core wood. However, we see live edge as a fluid, breathing landscape and an extension of the log that used to live in nature.

In this piece, we would like to show how wood logs with barks are transformed into wood furniture of different shapes and sizes, step by step. Keeping the live edges as the key feature of this furniture series, we celebrate the trees’ lives by integrating them into people’s everyday lives.

On top of the making-of installation featuring live edge furniture, we discover new ways to shape and convert live edge wood into a wood bird dynamic art installation. Suspended from the ceiling, a dynamic sculpture set made with live edge wood imitates the movement of flying birds gliding softly above the visitors. Guiding the viewer’s focus from the entrance to the edge of the room, the dynamic sculpture highlights the ways of observing the succession of live edges while blurring the boundaries between stillness and movement, confinement and freedom, object and life.
