Digital Puppet
In this project, coordinated by HUNG Keung and innov+media lab (imhk lab), the realms of art and technology have merged to pave the way for an extraordinary “Design + Art” project. By blending cutting-edge art technology with the cherished traditional puppetry of Hong Kong, a new and exhilarating viewing experience is crafted for audiences locally and worldwide. Digital puppetry refers to the technique of controlling puppets using digital technology, enabling puppeteers to manipulate their movements through motion capture systems and other computer-generated tools. This relatively new technique holds immense potential for creating innovative and captivating performances. It signifies a shift in our perception of art and cultural heritage, utilising advanced technologies like 3D printing, generative interactive graphics, and motion capture systems to produce unparalleled pieces. This interdisciplinary approach combines digital media design, art, and installation/exhibition, creating captivating and immersive works. By reinventing cultural heritage, the value of traditional art forms is also revitalised for the new generation, fostering a deeper understanding of the interconnectedness between design practice, digital art, interactive technology research, and cultural heritage.
