The State of Paper

1 / 1

“The State of Paper” aims to shed light on paper consumption in Hong Kong. Through an immersive experience, this project seeks to visually demonstrate how paper flows throughout the city, its diverse applications and its ultimate destination. It raises awareness about different types of paper and how we can address the issues of paper consumption and recycling.

Through an engaging and informative approach, “The State of Paper” provides a unique perspective on paper consumption, recycling, and the creative potential of recycled materials. By showcasing our extensive R&D on materials, we invite the viewers to reconsider their relationship with paper through personal experience with new materials derived from paper waste and understanding the local interpretations of recycled paper waste. On a grander scale, we aim to inspire the audience to imagine new possibilities in working with sustainable materials by openly sharing our recipes and processes for creating new materials.

We envision a local and potentially circular economy by showcasing how discarded paper can be transformed into new objects.

Duy Huynh, Fergal Tse

Duy Huynh and Fergal Tse are interdisciplinary designers currently based in Hong Kong. Both graduated from the Bachelor of Arts and Science in Design+ programme at the University of Hong Kong. Duy’s second major in material engineering sparked his interest in sustainability and design that respects nature, where he combined his knowledge of material innovation, research, and fabrication. Meanwhile, Fergal’s background in architecture led him to explore design thinking and innovation, bridging the gap between architecture and design in the face of Hong Kong’s rapid urbanisation. Combining their work experiences at makerspaces, design studios, and architectural practices, their approach spans multiple disciplines that include materials innovation, social innovation, architectural design and design research. Their works have been broadly exhibited at the Design Society complex in Sea World Culture and Arts Center (Shenzhen), PMQ and K11 (Hong Kong).
