Gratitude 2021

Cantonese (original) / English

Intensive competition drives social advancement—and anxiety. The constant comparison between “us and them” can sometimes leave us baffled, questioning even our own existence and value.

Yet we are all individuals, formed to a large extent by countless unplanned, unnoticeable happenings. Though seemingly meaningless, these define our here and now, and sometimes the connections between individuals too. And although these moments and connections are fleeting and fragile, the self and its connections will constantly be renewed as long as we stay alive. This is the only proof that we live as human beings.

Breathe, and we will witness our lives come full circle.

Bubbles are lightweight, fragile and vanish abruptly, they symbolize the existence of other individuals.

Eventually when the bubbles accumulate to a certain amount, we will see how they slowly disappear, and everything will start over again.

This art piece was inspired by my self-reflection and feelings towards the past and the present. Audiences can enjoy and observe the process, as well as come to their own interpretations for my work. With this installation, I hope they can see that even if the bubbles fade and disappear like our past, new bubbles will form at the same time and make up the new present. Hopefully my work can encourage people to be more aware of their present and open to what life brings.

Functionality is often simply an objective description of what one can do or perform with the item, yet effect would mean how this object connects to its surroundings, and affects the people who see or use it, or even the environment it is in.

A Red Dot Award: Design Concept winner in 2019, Jordan Lau graduated from Product Design at Hong Kong Polytechnic University in 2021.

Lau believes that design is inspired by life and thus collectively defined, thus bringing new perspectives to the community. To create good design, in addition to fulfilling functional needs, he explores the potential of objects beyond their physical form. By endowing everyday objects with new values, he hopes to create designs that inspire better living.
