Woodwork Spinning Top with Launcher Workshop
A spinning top is a toy with a long history that emphasises hand coordination and physical manipulation skills, which is particularly valuable in today’s technologically advanced society. By making wooden spinning tops and using recycled materials from daily life, we can reduce the consumption of natural resources and minimise environmental impact, promoting environmentally friendly material choices and achieving sustainable development goals. The scientific principles behind spinning tops can stimulate students’ interest in science and cultivate their creativity and problem-solving abilities. This combination of science and craftsmanship education can foster innovative thinking that can be applied in other fields, such as designing and manufacturing new toys or games, promoting the development of new techniques and skills.

Workshop by
Ho Lok Chung
Dave Ho Lok Chung is a full-time carpenter artist, the founder of Chip Good Guy Studio, and the owner of OLO PUZZLES HK, a three-dimensional puzzle store. His works are mainly sculptures, and he often uses recycled materials for creation. Recycled wood has become his primary creative medium. He has been using multiple identities to promote the development of art and crafts. His creations span sculpture to woodworking kinetic work, including art sculptures, public outdoor sculptures, woodworking automaton, and a series of handmade wooden spinning tops. His creations have been exhibited in Hong Kong, the United Kingdom, Macau and Taiwan. His public art piece “The Moment Between Good and Evil” is permanently collected by Cannizaro Park in London. His other two public art pieces, “Beacon of Hope” and “The Bloom in the Barrack”, are permanently shown in Queen’s Hill Estate.
