The Sugar Art
Sugar art was declared an intangible cultural heritage of Hong Kong in 2014. It has more than 600 years of history in China since the Song Dynasty, but today, there are only a few masters left who know this traditional skill. Sugar artists heat rock sugar up to 80 degrees, turning it into syrup, and use techniques such as pinching, pulling, cutting, and blowing to create works of art within minutes.
Sugar artisan Clemen Lo joined the Intangible Cultural Heritage Programme co-organised by Lingnan University and Hong Kong Arts School in 2019 and studied with traditional masters for one year. She then continued on with the ‘pass it on’ program and taught students in over 30 secondary schools with Lingnan University. In 2020, Clemen established “the.sugar.art” to inject contemporary ideas into this traditional art form. She also arranges workshops for public schools, NGOs and corporations to raise public awareness.
