‘A twist on the path of birdcage making: How can we reignite the passion for a dying craft’
The story of old Hong Kong won’t be complete without the mention of birdcage.
In fact, people used to be so enamoured with the bird-keeping culture we have a street dedicated to it. Come and learn the story of our bird street and the exquisite craftsmanship that has grown with it. Led by Dylan, the author of OPEN BIRDCAGES, and a few designers who have shadowed the last birdcage master in town, we’ll delve into the heart of birdcage production, its future application and how we can continue its story. Young apprentices will also share their aspirations and how they got into the birdcage business.

Dylan Kwok, Author of 'Open Birdcages', Co-creator of 'Bird/Cage/Twist'
Dylan Kwok is a maker, culturalist and storyteller.
He spent his childhood in Hong Kong and moved to Canada for college. During that time, Dylan became particularly intrigued by Nordic socialism and its minimalistic design, which led him to study and work in Finland. Years immersed in cultures have sparked his interest in creating objects that serve a broad audience. He has integrated design in various art projects involving public space elements, such as park benches, trams, podium gardens, community kitchens, and an old train station in Japan.
Before his current practice as an installation and performance artist, Dylan visualised interior concepts for Burdifilek Design Studio in Canada and joined different architectural offices in Finland. Currently teaching at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, he has managed various community projects and exhibitions for The Chinese University of Hong Kong (School of Architecture) and the Hong Kong Design Centre.
