Workshop

Making of Mahjong – Understanding how tools and materials affect products and design

1 / 1

Traditional mahjong tiles were made of ox bone and bamboo with mechanical tools like self-spinning drills and carving knives, and coloured by hand. Today, mahjong tiles are made of thermosetting plastic and mass-produced through moulding and polishing in spinning barrels. With the aid of computers, mahjong can now be coloured automatically in CAM machines, and tailored designs can be produced in small quantities with CNC machines. In this workshop, participants can experience various processes, from traditional mechanical self-spinning drills and carving to more contemporary ways of casting plastic and painting over CNC-carved tiles. Through these experiences, they will understand how mahjong evolves from tile and how tools and materials affect design.

Founded in 2020, “Glocal Mahjong” is a thematic mahjong creative cultural brand in Hong Kong that believes mahjong connects and inspires. The brand was awarded the “Grand Award of the Year” by Hong Kong Designers Association in 2022. It curates and creates mahjong thematic products and experiences that delight and bring knowledge to people and connect people of different cultures, origins and ages. Glocal Mahjong repositions mahjong as the stepping stone to Chinese culture and other knowledge, and the link between East and West. The word Glocal in the brand name reflects mahjong being globally popular yet locally diverse. Bridging cross-locality, cross-nationality and cross-generation, it is a good social or even professional game to be enjoyed together.
