Work in the Woods

Cantonese (original) / English

Work in the Woods is a speculative vision of future work-life patterns in mixed reality based on Hong Kong’s micro apartment. In the age of the COVID-19 pandemic, it has prompted us to reassess how we live in the future focusing on the desire to work from home. Referring to the Japanese practice of shinrin-yoku, or “forest bathing”, the proposal uses mixed reality to bring nature into the home, transforming it into a multifunctional, multidimensional space. It aims to engage and reconnect users—particularly those working long hours—with their homes. The project also reimagines our use space at work by transforming banal working routines into something more intuitive and physical, thus redefining the meaning of workspace.

‘Work in the woods’ is a piece that speculates future work-life patterns through mixed reality.

Micro work-life pattern proposes an immersive and interactive experience in response to Hong Kong’s housing crisis and lack of space. Our piece takes reference from the Japanese’s shinrin-yoku, or forest bathing, to bring nature into the concrete jungle through mixed reality and transform people’s homes into multifunctional and multidimensional spaces.

The project reimagines the way we use space at work by transforming the banal work routine into something more intuitive and physical, while redefining the meaning of ‘useful’/’useless’-ness of workspaces.

All graduates of the Bartlett School of Architecture, University of London, Ryan, Jackie and Anson share more than an education and a professional background in architecture; together, they also seek to document architecture in formats ranging from conceptual design and virtual reality to animation and art practice. Interactive architecture is their recent focus, and by bringing physical and virtual worlds closer together through the development of games, films and virtual reality, it has become their means of greatly expanding the production of space and objects.
