FM 108, to…

Cantonese (original) / English

In the radio spectrum, FM108 is an unused channel. Its absence of words and echoes offers room for conversation in our work.

In our society, human relationships are intangible and out of reach. In a split-second, all our efforts to adjust the distance, intensity and depth of relationships can be in vain. In the face of fleeting and uncontrollable emotions, why not find solace in the simple act of tuning into radio channels?

Listen to a message. Search for a signal. Ride the seesaw together, up and down, as we tune the frequency. In the useless FM108, you will hear—

We hope visitors can open their hearts and invite someone, even a stranger, to ride the see-saw together.

If you have any thoughts on relationships, feel free to leave a message in our voicemail.

Putting this thinking into relationships, our lives make up a lot of different relationships.

A lot of different relationships in a city came to mind when we were conceiving this piece.

The radio and see-saw used in this piece may be pretty useless items to many. Since most of us don’t listen to the radio anymore or don’t ride a see-saw now, these objects are of no use to you and you would see them as useless.

Usefulness actually depends on our needs at the moment, instead of the objective functions of an item.

Like an archipelago’s chain of independent but self-sufficient islands, Dou Chai Arts Society is formed by several autonomous art parties with diverse specialties. As a co-creating space, its works range from local craftsmanship, arts and culture, to communal education.

Dou Chai was founded by Sam Chan, a Registered Architect who works to promote urban and spatial design; and Fato Leung, an art and cultural project coordinator with a focus on community education.

Hui Chi Sang graduated from the School of Creative Media at City University of Hong Kong with a major in Cinematic Art. As a student, his works were selected by a number of local and overseas film festivals, and he has worked in the field of moving images since graduation.
