Dancing with David

Cantonese (original) / English

David cut off Goliath’s head because people needed a legend. David was resurrected in white marble by Michelangelo because people needed a representation of perfection. David was relocated from the top floor of a church to the entrance of Florence City Hall because people needed a symbol of defiance to power. David’s head was eventually copied because people needed to learn how to sketch objects.

Useless and useful, intangible and tangible; it’s all about perception and context. When an object is needed in a specific context and a targeted purpose, it is deemed useful; but if its metaphysical purposes are removed, it becomes useless. Take away the soul of a pinnacle of art, the skill and technique it embodies. Mechanise and magnify it with modern technology, and give it an insignificant function. Add sound, projection and whirling movement—all to make you dance your life away. Is this grotesque purpose useful or useless? You can choose to sneer, or you can dance with David.

STICKYLINE

We hope visitors can appreciate this exhibit without having to guess the message behind. There is no need to force yourself to think about the creators’ intentions, but simply come with an open mind and take in the Statue of David.

The idea of usefulness may seem like a clear-cut matter, either something is useful or useless. Until you think about the message behind this whole exhibition, you will realise it encourages people to give up this black and white mindset. We hope this can help people realize that most matters are not purely right or wrong.

We hope we can bring about a different David that stands apart from other iterations. His eyes will light up and project beams across the room, while his head slowly turns around. The public will interact with David without even noticing. In a way, visitors will be forced into a dance of sorts with David.

STICKYLINE

Founded in 2011 by Mic Leong and Soilworm Lai, Stickyline focuses on paper engineering and structure development. The duo work in the space between the imaginary and the real, transforming two-dimensional planes into three-dimensional forms through deconstruction and reconstruction. By folding and creasing, they have created their own form as installation art, sculpture, stage design, window display, and more.
