Useful or useless? Let’s find out through 50 simple tests. Find the value of words in observation—in the act of observing itself, and in the message and communicative function of words. In this Design Dialogue, the founding members of Typeclub will deconstruct the purpose of typography design.

Keith Tam

Founding Member of Typeclub

Typographer, information designer, researcher and educator, Keith Tam is currently Head of Department of Communication Design and Director of the Centre for Communication Design at the Hong Kong Design Institute, as well as a Distinguished Research Fellow at the Type Lab of the Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts, Shanghai University. Previously, Tam taught at the University of Reading (UK), Hong Kong Polytechnic University and Emily Carr University of Art and Design (Canada). His pedagogy, research and consultancy services focus on typography and information design, particularly in the context of multilingual communication.

Spencer Wong

Founding Member of Typeclub

Spencer graduated from Fine Arts Faculty at HKU & taken the Master degree on Business science in NUI.

He started his advertising career since 1989, working in various global advertising firms like Ogilvy, Leo Burnett, Bates, Ball Partnership and McCann and still stay relevant.
Throughout the years, Spencer has made Hong Kong advertising and creative industry well‐known in the world, by winning more than 600 awards internationally, including the HK first ever Design Grand Priz at Cannes Lion Festival.

In 2018, Spencer restarts his new company with the legendary Maurice & Charles Saatchi, named M&C Saatchi Spencer.
Spencer is the Foreman of D&AD on the panel of Art direction & Black Pencil. He has been voted as Hong Kong 100 most influenced persons by SCMP Debrett’s.

Katol Lo

Founding Member of Typeclub

Katol Lo, Hong Kong artist with multiple identities.

Katol serves as the Art and Design Director of international artist Little Thunder for 10+ years whom jointly launched publications sold to more than 20+ countries. He is also the co-founder and former member of Start From Zero, one of the representative units of local street art culture established for more than 15 years in Hong Kong.

At the same time, Katol is a Graphic Designer who created works for more than 100+ local and international brands from all categories such as Nike, New Balance, Elephant Ground, Blue Bottle, K11, RTHK, CRHK etc.

In recent years, Katol delved into the art of hand lettering. Integrating his design experience and professional sign painting studies in UK and Taiwan, Katol’s has established a unique style in the local art scene particularly in hand lettering.
