In collaboration with deTour 2019, Har Par music will showcase a piece of new stained glass panel designed by world renowned artist Helen Whittaker from the UK specifically for the festival, responding to this year’s theme “NEW OLD. OLD NEW.”. The design is inspired by one of the many stained glass panels in the historic Haw Par Mansion, now revitalized as Har Par Music.

In this Design Dialogue, Helen will be joined by Mr. Wong Kwok-chung and Mr. Roger Wu to share their experience. Wong Kwok-chung is a Hong Kong based contemporary glass artist. He has recently completed the restoration of some of the Haw Par Mansion’s stained glass panels, and is in the process of producing two new replacement pieces for Haw Par Music. Haw Par Music is a centre for cross-cultural exchange through music, heritage and arts, with a social initiative. It aims to create a unique place where the heritage of the Haw Par Mansion integrates with vibrant and enriched music education and arts programmes for the Hong Kong community. It also serves to develop broader cultural understanding for the enrichment of life, future community and service leaders, and to enhance the harmony through music.

Retained in its original appearance, Haw Par Mansion has a remarkable heritage value. Preserved and passed to Government in 2001 and included in Batch III of the Revitalising Historic Building, the revitalisation proposal of Haw Par Mansion proposed by Aw Boon Haw Foundation cooperating with Haw Par Music Foundation Limited was selected. Through the scheme, the external walls and interior decorations of the main block are restored to its former 1930s look, retaining its architectural authenticity. The revitalised Mansion becomes the home of Haw Par Music, a unique place where the heritage of the building combines with the vibrant and enriched music and arts related programmes for the Hong Kong community, to nurture talents and to promote cross-cultural exchanges through both Chinese and Western music training under one roof.
